Art Journal Challenge #5: Symmetry or not?
|When we look at art journal pages they often seem carefree and spontaneous but the best art journal pages work because they still use underlying design principles. One choice any artist makes is whether they are going to use symmetry or not and how that will affect the end product. Artists may also choose to break design ârulesâ.
Symmetrical pages
– are mirrored exactly
– they appear calm and pleasing to the eye
– near symmetry has a slight variance such as you might expect to see in nature
– could be radial i.e. symmetrical around the centre e.g flowers, snowflakes or some stained glass windows.
Asymmetrical pages
– are not mirrored
– probably have equal âweightâ
– have drama and appear informal and energetic
– usually use the
rule of thirds
to create balance and visual interest.
Rule of Thirds: the intersection of lines that divide the page into a 3×3 grid (thirds) act as âpower pointsâ that draw the eye.
YOUR CHALLENGE
When you create your layout this week, think about symmetry and how it affects your page. Post your layout and when you link it in the thread please try to explain the artistic decisions you made in terms of symmetry.
