Art Journal Challenge #4: Find your poetry
|This week is a wordy week, time to explore some techniques for using words. Many art journals use words that have been âfoundâ as part of other texts. There are a number of techniques you can use to incorporate words from text into your pages.
1. Circle (or highlight) the words within a larger text that you want to focus on and use to convey your message.
2. Paint over the unimportant words, leaving only the words that carry your story (black out poetry)
3. Cut out the words you want to use and âpasteâ them onto your page.
Any text is a possible source of words and inspiration – magazines, books, newspapers, advertisements, your own writing – anything. You can choose individual words or phrases and repurpose them ransom note style.
Scan your own or use designer produced word art and wordstrips.
Note that the term âpoetryâ does not require you to actually produce a poem or have it rhyme, itâs more about the imagery created by your choice of words.
Here is an article that describes the difference between found and black out poetry and talks about its history.
